Background

The Fv64 between Kristiansund and Averøy in Nordmøre runs 5.8 kilometres under the Norwegian Sea. The tunnel opened on 19 December 2009 and is part of the link that connects Averøy to the mainland.

The Kristiansund to Averøy ferry was a short but frequent crossing. The tunnel gave the town and the island a fixed, weather-independent connection, with the Atlantic Ocean Road at the other end.

Just past the tunnel portal on the Averøy side the road passes Kverva, with the Atlantic Ocean Road, one of Norway's best-known tourist roads, at the other end. In bad weather the tunnel can still close, particularly to heavy vehicles.
