Background
The Fv5236 runs 2 kilometres in tunnel between the mainland at Fana in Bergen and Bjorøy in Øygarden. The tunnel opened in 1996 and replaced the ferry between Alvøen and Bjorøyhamn.
It reaches 88 metres below sea level, and the steepest gradient is 10 percent. With a short road into Bergen, Bjorøy became something of a suburb, and the commuting goes through the same tunnel.
Bjorøy has no other way out. When the tunnel closes, the island is cut off, so check the status before you drive.
