Background
The E75 runs 2.9 kilometres in tunnel under the Bussesundet strait, from the mainland by Svartnes out to Vardø in Finnmark. The tunnel opened in 1982, as the first undersea road tunnel in Norway.
It was formally opened by King Olav in August 1983, and gave Vardø the country's first fixed road connection to the Varanger peninsula. The tunnel reaches 88 metres below sea level.
Vardø still has no other fixed way in, so a closure isolates Norway's easternmost town. Check the status before you drive, especially in winter.
