Background
The Rv70 between Flatsetøya in Gjemnes and Bergsøya runs 5.1 kilometres under the Freifjord in Møre og Romsdal. The tunnel is the main part of Krifast, the fixed link to Kristiansund and Frei.
Krifast opened in August 1992, with the tunnel, the floating bridge over the Bergsøysundet and the Gjemnessund bridge, and gave Kristiansund a ferry-free mainland connection for the first time. The tunnel was officially opened by prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, and reaches 130 metres below sea level.
All road traffic to Kristiansund goes through this tunnel, and on over the Atlantic Ocean tunnel towards Averøy. A closure therefore affects the town, Frei and Averøy alike, left without a road in. Check the status before you drive.
